HYDERABAD: The local Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) office, on Friday, issued a two-day heavy rainfall warning for the entire state indicating that 25 per cent of Telangana’s landmass will receive over seven centimetres of rainfall during this period.
“Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in all districts of Telangana,” the warning read.
According to officials, the rain is likely to be triggered by a trough spanning across Chhattisgarh to Tamil Nadu, coupled with “the presence of an active monsoon season”.
“Most of the city would receive rains, but there would be a few areas which would receive excess rainfall, anywhere between 70 millimetres and 120 millimetres. This activity, however, will pause by June 20, but after that there are chances that the monsoon might only strengthen even further,” said Y K Reddy, director (in-charge), IMD Hyderabad.
Sharing similar predictions, even meteorologists from private weather forecasting units like Skymet said that, rains are likely to continue over Telangana for the next 24 hours.
“We predict that the intensity of the rainfall will rise and from isolated spells, it will soon turn into moderate or heavy spells of rain,” said Mahesh Palwat, chief meteorologist, Skymet. The rains, he added, are expected to result in a drop in temperatures.
But while the drop in temperature might come as good news to residents , other civic crises related to the rains, including severe waterlogging, will continue to haunt them. In fact, on Thursday several places like Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, Ameerpet, Dilsukhnagar, LB Nagar, Punjagutta, Secunderabad, Abids and Uppal, were left waterlogged soon after the rains. The inundated roads not only led to severe traffic chaos on the roads but also affected power supply in many places across Hyderabad.
